Hola from Señora Maria

We are excited to offer Spanish language classes to our 3’s, 4’s, and Pre-K 5 classes at the Preschool! We use a curriculum from Sonrisas Spanish School that is specifically tailored for preschool and early elementary-aged children. It is fun and interactive and relies heavily on songs, games, and authentic Spanish children’s literature. If you are interested in learning more, please visit Sonrisas Spanish School.

The first goal of the Sonrisas curriculum is to provide a positive foreign language experience for each student. The second, wholly dependent on the first, is language acquisition. We have lots of fun together and learn a lot in the process! Spanish is on Wednesdays and Thursdays each week. It is only 15 minutes each day per class, but you will be surprised at what the children will absorb in this short amount of time!

Spanish is taught by Señora Maria Berardo.

During the first semester, we worked on colors, numbers, shapes, body parts, and simple phrases such as: ¿Cómo te llamas tú? / What is your name?; hola / hello; adiós / goodbye; Buenos días / Good morning; ¿Dónde está? / Where is it?; por favor / please; gracias / thank you; and muy bien / very good. We will continue to reinforce this vocabulary in the second semester and will be studying families, clothing, emotions, and days of the week, with smaller units surrounding holidays and other special lessons.

All the research shows that now is the time to start our children on a second language, not middle school when many of our public schools start foreign language classes. We continue to be thrilled that our preschool can offer this enrichment opportunity for our children!
